The Opening of Redding’s Holiday Season: MTL Art Show

On Wednesday, the Mark Twain Library was abuzz with activity as close to 130 artists dropped off their work, hoping the juror would chose their pieces for the Mark Twain Library art show.

The 2018 Art Show was juried by Judith Pond Kudlow. Jury of Awards this year is Zufar Bikbov.

Judith Pond Kudlow is an accomplished artist who understands the process from both sides. She has felt the elation of having a piece accepted… among many other distinguished exhibitions she has had her work displayed at the MTL show. She also sympathizes with an artist when a piece is not chosen, sharing that when facing that kind of disappointment herself, she used it as a learning tool. Kudlow hopes that artists whose work was not accepted will not be discouraged and will strive higher for the next show.

Although the submissions are high caliber, there are other factors in successfully jurying an art show. Ludlow first looks at the art on her own and then goes back around with the Art Co-chairs: Pam Reiss and Kathy Anderson. Reiss and Anderson have been hanging the show long enough to know how many pieces can comfortably fit in the limited space. Size and variety also matter.

Once the juror has made her decisions, the volunteers get to work. They have just 2 days to turn the library into a gallery.

Having submitted art work for the last 6 years, I was elated one year when my painting was chosen. And, happy that it is now hanging in a Redding home, as are some of my silent auction donations. Other years, having my work rejected was discouraging. Bt it didn’t stop my creativity, or my desire to try again.

This year, I am thrilled that my 3-D piece called the Beaded Lady made the cut and am proud that it will be displayed with the sculptures of such well known artists as Babette Bloch and Mark Mellon.

On Friday, Redding’s art lovers will be dusting off their sport coats and cocktail dresses (I might wear my tiara) to attend the Art Show Preview Gala. The event is by ticket only and is sold out. Artists will be hoping that a colored dot appears next to their work, signifying that it is sold.

The Art Show is open to the public from December 1- December 10. Special Library Hours for the Week of the Art Show: Monday and Thursday: 10 AM to 8 PM, Tuesday and Wednesday: 10 AM to 7 PM, Friday and Saturday: 10 AM to 5 PM, and Sunday: 12 to 5 PM  There is no charge to visit the gallery. All art is available for purchase with a portion of each sale going to support the library.

All library services will be available during the show although no book fair donations will be accepted.
